Fragrance no. 01Vêpres

A fragrance in three movements, worn from dusk into the small hours.

Scent has terroir. We bottle the place, not the idea of it.

Verroirverre + terroir

Most houses settle on a formula and repeat it forever. We work the way a small winery does. Single-origin materials. A vintage that moves with the harvest. Batches small enough to number on the base by hand.

Calabrian bergamot reads one way this year and another the next — and we let it. A bottle of Vêpres can tell you which hillside its iris was dug from, and how many winters it was left to dry before anyone smelled it.

Movement I — the opening

TopThe first ten minutes. Cold, bright, and gone before you've quite decided about it.

Bergamot

Reggio Calabria

Rind pressed within a day of picking. Bitter at the edge, green at the centre, never candied.

Pink pepper

Île de la Réunion

A dry crackle, like static lifting off a wool coat in the cold.

Neroli

Nabeul, Tunisia

Orange blossom distilled at dawn, while the flowers are still half-closed.

Movement II — the turn

HeartTwenty minutes in, the citrus burns off and the flowers step forward. This is the part you'll be asked about.

Orris

Tuscany · aged 3 yrs

Iris root, dried until it smells of cold cream, of violets, and faintly of a pencil shaving.

Jasmine sambac

Tamil Nadu

Picked after dark, when it's heaviest. Indolic, a little animal, unmistakably alive.

Saffron

a single thread

Leather and dried apricot, in a dose you would only notice once it was gone.

A purple iris emerging from darkness — the orris at the heart of the fragrance.

Movement III — the stay

BaseHour two and onward. What's left on the pillow — the reason people lean in to ask.

Oud

Assam · farmed

Not the medicinal kind. Warm, resinous, a touch sweet — the smell of a wooden box left in the sun.

Ambergris

beach-found, W. Australia

Salt, skin, and old paper. It does little on its own and makes everything above it last.

Vetiver

Haiti

Roots, smoke, and the smell of cut earth a few minutes after rain.

Smoke rising from dark vessels — the oud and resins that make up the drydown.

Heavy in the hand,
refilled by the same hand.

Smoked glass, blown thick enough to sit cold in the palm. Bring it back when it's empty and we'll refill it from the same batch while the harvest lasts — replaced only if you want it to be. Every flacon is numbered on the base by whoever filled it.

The nose
"Most perfume is over-blended and under-aged. Vêpres is my argument against both."

Verroir is the work of Hélène Roy. She trained in Grasse, left it, and spent four years learning to dig and dry her own orris before she sold a single bottle. She composes alone, in a converted glassworks where the windows still smell faintly of furnace, and she will tell you — unprompted — exactly how long each material was rested before it earned its place.

Acquire

Decide on skin,
not on a card.

Vêpres isn't sold in department-store light and won't be. Request a sample vial — 2 ml, enough for three honest wearings — and let it spend a day with you before you commit to a bottle.
